Why We Created This Guide

We believe that Artificial Intelligence is a powerful tool that should be understood by everyone, not just experts. As AI becomes a bigger part of our daily lives—from how we get driving directions to how we shop online—basic AI literacy is becoming a fundamental skill, just like reading or maths. For many people, however, the world of AI can feel intimidating or complicated. Our goal is to change that.

This guide was created to be a safe, friendly, and non-threatening first step into the world of AI. We want to empower you with the basic skills and confidence you need to explore this technology on your own terms. We believe that by starting with the fundamentals—like creating a digital key (your email) and playing in a safe environment—you can build a solid foundation for lifelong learning in a rapidly changing world.

Our Commitment

Our commitment is to provide a learning experience that is:

• Welcoming: We use simple language and avoid technical jargon to ensure nobody feels left behind.
• Hands-On: We believe the best way to learn is by doing, which is why our site is full of interactive games and tools that build confidence through play.
• Culturally Respectful: Technology must honour and respect the cultures it serves. Our section on AI & Te Ao Māori is a core part of our mission, reflecting the principle that technology should be co-designed with the community to ensure it is developed and used responsibly here in Aotearoa.

We are inspired by the work of pioneers like Doug Healey, the founder of the AI Marae, who has led the way in creating culturally aware and safe spaces for learning about this technology. Our guide aims to build on that foundation of community-focused education.
